How it works

These are the key steps, in the right order. Answer the short questions; then you see exactly what applies to you and what is added.

  1. 1Decide which registration record you needFirst you decide which registration you need. The current one or an earlier one? And who wants to see the paper?Key step
    Why?
This decides where you ask. For registrations before March 2002, the municipality of that time is responsible.
    What you do
Write down which time period you need. Also note which office the paper is for.
    Where?
Meldeservice / damalige GemeindeDirectly with the named service
    In detail

    Choose the period and recipient

Record the required current or former registration and recipient. For registrations before March 2002 contact the former municipality.

  2. 2Request the confirmation onlineYou can request the confirmation for yourself online. This works for registrations from 1 March 2002.Key step
    Why?
This way you do not have to go to an office. You need ID Austria or EU Login for it. That is a digital ID for the internet.
    What you do
Log in to the official online service. Check there how you pay. einfach.wien does not store login data and does not pay anything for you.

    Request your own confirmation online

Online only for your own simple or historical ZMR confirmation from 1 March 2002. Personally authenticate with ID Austria or EU Login in official service and review payment there. No credentials, addresses or payment data are collected here, no application signed or paid.

  3. 3Apply at the MeldeserviceThe Meldeservice is the office where you register addresses. There you can apply for the confirmation in person or in writing.Key step
    Why?
Sometimes online does not work. For example for a child, for the whole household or for old registrations.
    What you do
Check opening times or an appointment directly with the Meldeservice. For the household, everyone must sign. It does not work by phone. Before 1 March 2002, ask the municipality of that time.
    Where?

Apply with the appropriate registration service

Directly clarify personal or informal written route, actual registration service, public service hours or appointment and identity evidence. Residence deregistered before 1 March 2002: former municipality. Household: application of everyone registered there with all signatures; child may require parental responsibility evidence. Vienna official records original or certified; confirm actual postal procedure, no universal emailed scan route. Telephone applications are not possible.

  4. 4Check the fees firstA fee is money you pay the office. How much depends on the way you apply.Key step
    Why?
According to the federal government, an oral application is free. In writing it says 21 Euro, electronically 13 Euro. For social insurance, with a request letter, it may be free.
    What you do
Ask the Meldeservice beforehand what exactly you pay. There may be more costs. In the 9th and 19th district, only card payment works.

    Review actual fees before requesting

Fees have several components: federal page lists oral application free, written 21 euros and electronic 13 euros, certificate 21 euros with specified recipient exception and administration local 2.10 euros or ZMR3 euros. Vienna lists social-insurance purpose with request letter free; directly confirm actual application. Also review attachments and route, derive no total price from checklist. 5. 5Check the confirmationYou have received the confirmation. Now you check it yourself.Key step
    Why?
Is the time period right? Does it fit the office that needs it? Only then does it help you.
    What you do
Read the paper carefully. If an entry is wrong, sort it out with the Meldeservice.

    Privately review received own confirmation

Personally check actual period and recipient need. Use existing appropriate confirmation if recipient accepts. Clarify incorrect own entry with registration service; a register correction or new registration does not happen automatically. The sources name no general validity period.
