How it works

These are the key steps, in the right order. Answer the short questions; then you see exactly what applies to you and what is added.

  1. 1Choose your device for confirmingA factor is the device you use to confirm it is you. Usually it is the ID Austria app on your phone.Key step
    Why?
    Without a factor you cannot use ID Austria. But a phone is not the only option.
    What you do
    A FIDO security key also works. That is a small device, similar to a USB stick. A signature card with a reader also works. Check in the official guide if your device fits.

    Choose a suitable authentication factor

    A smartphone is not the only option: besides the ID Austria app (current iOS/Android with device lock, including device password) compatible FIDO security keys, a signature card with reader or the A-Trust Signatur app are provided for. Check device compatibility yourself in the official guidance; no security workarounds (e.g. root).

  2. 2Find an office that can register youA registration office is an office that is allowed to activate your ID Austria.Key step
    Why?
    Not every office may do this for everyone. It depends on your citizenship.
    What you do
    Austrians in Vienna can go to the Bezirksamt, the district office, for example. Without Austrian citizenship, from age 14 you go to the Landespolizeidirektion or the Finanzamt. Check the current list of offices.

    Confirm an eligible registration authority

    With Austrian citizenship: passport authorities (in Vienna the municipal district offices), state police directorate, tax offices and listed municipalities. Without Austrian citizenship from age 14: state police directorate or tax office with sufficient connection to Austria. Residence alone does not decide the service; check the current authority list.

    Prepare the applicable identity documents

    Official photo ID in original. With Austrian citizenship passport, identity card or driving licence with proof of citizenship; without Austrian citizenship passport or identity card. With pre-registration exactly the document entered in part 1. Photo only when actually needed; photo exceptions: Austrian passport expired at most six years, identity card at most one year, or e-card photo already submitted.
