How it works

These are the key steps, in the right order. Answer the short questions; then you see exactly what applies to you and what is added.

  1. 1Register early with the AMSYou already know when your job ends. Then you can register with the AMS beforehand.Key step
    Why?
If you register too late, you may have gaps in health or pension insurance. Registering early protects you.
    What you do
Apply at the earliest three weeks before the end. Fill it in as if you were already unemployed. You must be registered at the latest on your first day without work, or the next working day after a weekend or holiday.

    Register early with AMS

If the end is fixed, you can apply up to three weeks before, filled in as if already unemployed. At the latest on the first day of unemployment (next working day if that is a weekend or holiday). Late registration can cause gaps in health and pension insurance.

  2. 2Apply for unemployment benefitHere you apply for unemployment benefit. This also registers you as a job seeker. The application is free.Key step
    Why?
Without an application there is no money from the AMS.
    What you do
Apply online through MeinAMS. You need your social insurance number, contact details, last job, training, end of work and any employer payments after it. Keep the confirmation and new appointments safe.

  3. 3Learn what you must reportReporting duties mean you must tell the AMS about changes in your life. Some at once, some within one week.Key step
    Why?
If you report late, money only comes from the report. For breaches the AMS can stop the money or ask for it back.
    What you do
Report at once: new work, illness, hospital, spa stay or a trip abroad. Within one week: address, family, training, pension application, income. After more than 62 days without benefit you need a new application.

Delay means money only from the report; breaches can lead to suspension and repayment. More than 62 days without benefit: new application.
