How it works

These are the key steps, in the right order. Answer the short questions; then you see exactly what applies to you and what is added.

  1. 1Check which document is missingA travel document is an ID for travelling. This is about the Austrian passport or Personalausweis.Key step
    Why?
Other papers have their own routes. For example a driving licence or residence permit.
    What you do
Check whether it is your own document. And whether you are in Austria.
    Where?
Passport authorityDirectly with the named service
    In detail

Confirm travel document and actual domestic case

Only your own adult Austrian passport or identity card. Other identification cards, driving licences, residence permits, foreign documents and cases abroad have separate routes.

  2. 2Report the loss to the passport officeThe Passbehörde is the office for passports and ID cards. There you report the loss.Key step
    Why?
If you lose it in Austria, you must report it to the Passbehörde. A report at the lost and found office is not enough.
    What you do
Contact the Passbehörde yourself. Ask whether you need an appointment.

Report loss directly to the passport authority

Loss in Austria requires reporting to the passport authority. An online lost-property report does not replace this. Personally confirm actual contact or appointment; no agent reports or blocks the document.

  3. 3Report the theft to the policeTheft means someone took something from you. A report to the police is called an Anzeige.Key step
    Why?
A stolen passport must be reported to the police right away.
    What you do
Go to the police quickly. Bring another photo ID if you have one. If you have none, ask there.
    Where?
    PolizeiDirectly with the named service
    In detail

    Report theft promptly to police

Promptly report stolen passports or identity cards to police. Use photo identification if available; directly clarify absent ID. Online reporting has narrow conditions, no universal account or ID Austria requirement for making a report.

  4. 4Keep your report number and confirmationA reference is, for example, the number of your report. A confirmation is a paper about your report.Key step
    Why?
With it, you can later show that you reported the loss.
    What you do
Keep your report safe. Ask whether you need a confirmation. Only bring the papers that are asked for.
    Where?

    What you need

  5. 5Find out if you need a new documentReplacement means you get a new document.Key step
    Why?
The report alone does not give you a new passport.
    What you do
Ask the Passbehörde how to get a new document. Ask about proof and appointments. If it is urgent, say so.

Agree actual replacement or recovery route

Ask passport authority about appropriate reissue, individual evidence, actual appointments and any urgent solution. Reporting grants no replacement passport; do not use a recovered document without review.
