How it works

These are the key steps, in the right order. Answer the short questions; then you see exactly what applies to you and what is added.

  1. 1Learn what the Härteausgleich isHärteausgleich is extra money if you are in need. The BKA decides on it. BKA is the Bundeskanzleramt, a state office.Key step
    Why?
There is no fixed right to it. The BKA only pays while there is money for it. You do not simply get it for part-time work.
    What you do
Check if you are fully off work without pay. For public service or AMS cases, ask the BKA or the Social Ministry Service. Do not enter household details here.
    Where?
BKA / SozialministeriumserviceDirectly with the named service

    In detail

Treat hardship support as an additional decision

BKA decides within available resources; there is no legal entitlement. Review full unpaid hospice leave and relevant public-service or advised AMS cases. Infer no blanket reduced-hours support and record no household data here.

  2. 2Check if you lack money to live onFinancial hardship means you lack money to live on. Here you check if this is true for you.Key step
    Why?
Only then is the Härteausgleich possible. Where you mainly live also matters.
    What you do
Ask the BKA or the Social Ministry Service. The office checks your case. The app does not work out whether you get anything.
    Where?

Clarify appropriate leave and financial hardship

Review lost income, actual hospice measure and conditions such as centre of life directly. The responsible service confirms the individual case; the app calculates no eligibility.

  3. 3Watch the deadline for hardship helpThere is also a deadline for the Härteausgleich. A deadline is a time in which you must do something.Key step
    Why?
If you send the request within two months of the start, it often counts from the start. Later it often counts only from the request. After the end it is too late.
    What you do
You can apply together with the Pflegekarenzgeld. Is the money decision still missing? Then ask the Social Ministry Service in Steiermark how to keep the deadline.

Safeguard hardship deadline independently of benefit decision

Within two months from start support can run from the beginning; afterwards before ending generally from application, after ending it is late. Hardship support can be requested with care-leave benefit. If that decision is pending agree timely submission directly.

  4. 4Collect the papers about your householdHere you collect your papers. This includes the current form for the Härteausgleich.Key step
    Why?
The office must see how much money your household has. And it must see how long you are off work.
    What you do
Add proof of income for everyone in your household. Also the confirmation of your time off and the Pflegekarenzgeld decision. Do not upload personal papers here.

  6. 6Read the letters with the decisionsYour request has been sent. Now letters with decisions will come.Key step
    Why?
There are two separate decisions. One is about Pflegekarenzgeld, one about the Härteausgleich.
    What you do
Read the letters carefully. Look at the amount, the time period and the conditions. Conditions are rules you must follow.
