How it works

These are the key steps, in the right order. Answer the short questions; then you see exactly what applies to you and what is added.

  1. 1Report the loss and order a new cardYou report the loss and order a new card. The old card is then blocked. Blocked means it no longer works.Key step
    Why?
This way nobody can use your old card. You do not need a police report for this.
    What you do
Contact your insurance fund soon or call 0501243311 at the local rate. The new card usually comes in a few days. But this is not guaranteed.

Report loss and request a replacement

Report loss or theft promptly to own insurer or 0501243311 at local rate. Use personal insurance number and delivery address only directly with insurer. Old card is blocked; police theft report is unnecessary for replacement. Usual delivery within days is no guarantee.

  2. 2Check your address for deliveryThe new card comes by post. For this, the insurance fund must have your correct address.Key step
    Why?
Otherwise the card does not reach you. Maybe a photo is still missing too.
    What you do
Ask your insurance fund about address and photo. Do not order a second time. Did you find the old card again? Only use it after asking.

    Clarify replacement delivery

Directly clarify actual block or replacement order, known delivery address and pending photo or identity request with insurer. Follow existing replacement process, do not automatically place second order. Do not use rediscovered reported card without authority status clarification.

  3. 3Check the costs of the new cardThis is about costs for the new card. Sometimes the replacement is free, sometimes it costs something.Key step
    Why?
If the card is damaged or your name changed, the replacement is free. If it was lost or it was your fault, there may be a fee.
    What you do
Ask your insurance fund what you have to pay. The yearly Serviceentgelt is something else. It is not a replacement fee.

Separate actual replacement costs from annual fee

Official overview lists replacement for EHIC expiry, name change or defective card free; loss or self-caused unusability may incur fee. Directly confirm individual classification with insurer. Annual service fee is no universal replacement fee; no free replacement promised for every loss.

  4. 4Check the new cardYou have received the new card. Now you check if everything is fine.Key step
    Why?
Maybe the insurance fund still wants something from you. For example a photo.
    What you do
Look at the card. Ask the insurance fund if anything is still open.

Clarify actually received replacement card and remaining needs

Privately review received own card and actually pending insurer requirements. Reported loss alone means no completed replacement process or confirmed benefit entitlement.

Depending on your situation, this is added

  • Find out what is wrong with your e-card
  • Ask your health insurer first
  • Arrange a doctor's visit without a card
  • Check if a photo is missing
  • Sort out a fault or block with your insurer
  • Get your e-prescription without the card
Use the questions to find out which of these apply to you
Tailored to you
