How it works

These are the key steps, in the right order. Answer the short questions; then you see exactly what applies to you and what is added.

  1. 1Learn what Familienhospizkarenz isHospice means being with a person at the end of their life. Familienhospizkarenz is time off work for this. It is for end-of-life support or for very seriously ill children.Key step
    Why?
There are three separate things: your job, the money and extra help. If you keep them apart, you mix nothing up. The app does not judge any illness.
    What you do
Ask an employment law advice service or the Social Ministry Service. The Social Ministry Service (Sozialministeriumservice) is a state office. There you find out which route fits you.

Separate hospice measure from general care leave

End-of-life support concerns a life-threatening poor condition. Seriously ill children need not face immediate danger to life. The app assesses no illness. Employment rights, care-leave benefit and hardship support are separate matters.

  2. 2Check if the ill person counts as familyRelatives are people in your family. Here you check if the ill person counts as one. And you check the exact reason for the support.Key step
    Why?
Just needing care is not yet end-of-life support. The official pages do not all say the same here. So you get your case confirmed.
    What you do
Go to an employment law advice service. They help with questions about your job. Ask there if your route fits.

    Confirm relatives and actual occasion

Care needs alone are not end-of-life support. The labour ministry describes both hospice routes as independent of a shared household; the Social Ministry Service page contains a conflicting older child exception. Confirm the actual route legally; infer no household condition automatically.

  3. 3Tell your employer in writingNotice means you tell your employer. You do this in writing, so on paper or by email.Key step
    Why?
Then your employer knows what you do, when it starts and how long it lasts. The employer may not demand one specific kind of proof.
    What you do
Write down the type, the start and the length. Briefly explain the reason. If your employer asks for proof that you are related, add it. A note from a doctor can help.

    Prepare written notice

Give written notice of the chosen measure, start and duration. Make the reason credible; according to the ministry the employer cannot prescribe a specific form of evidence. Medical confirmation may be useful but is no blanket app requirement.

  4. 4Plan the right start dateThis is about the right timing. Working days are the days when people normally work.Key step
    Why?
You give notice at least five working days before the start. Often the time off starts five working days later at the earliest. Your employer may agree to something better.
    What you do
Get the exact date confirmed by the advice service or your employer. The app does not calculate a date.

Clarify five working days and actual start

Notify no later than five working days before planned start; generally start no earlier than five working days after receipt unless more favourable terms are agreed. Seek advice on receipt, weekends and special cases; no date calculation.

  5. 5Check if you can get PflegekarenzgeldPflegekarenzgeld is money from the state. You may get it if you work less to give support.Key step
    Why?
Then you may not lose all your pay. Hospice support has its own rules, not the normal care rules.
    What you do
The Social Ministry Service checks your confirmed time off and your situation. Do you only work at other times or part-time? Then sort out the money separately.

Clarify care-leave benefit for confirmed hospice measure

The Social Ministry Service reviews the confirmed measure and relevant status. Do not automatically transfer general care-leave care-allowance level, predominant-care declaration or employment conditions. Clarify schedule-only changes and reduced hours separately for benefits.
