How it works

These are the key steps, in the right order. Answer the short questions; then you see exactly what applies to you and what is added.

  1. 1Learn the three kinds of coverThere are three kinds of cover: for accidents, for illness and for your pension. A small job only gives you accident cover for sure.Key step
    Why?
Your employer must register you even for a small job. You have no e-card? That does not mean you are not registered.
    What you do
You sort this out directly with the ÖGK or your employer. Do not enter pay or insurance numbers here.

Distinguish accident, health and pension cover

A marginal job alone provides accident insurance, not automatic health and pension cover. Employers must register marginal jobs; a missing e-card proves no registration failure. Record no earnings or insurance numbers here.

  2. 2Check all your jobsHere you look at all your jobs. For 2026 the ÖGK names a limit of 551.10 euros a month. For the Dienstleistungsscheck it is 755.01 euros.Key step
    Why?
Do you have several jobs, even one after another in the same month? Then you may be compulsorily insured. That means insurance applies automatically.
    What you do
Your insurer checks your case. Part months and special cases are checked one by one. The app does not calculate anything.

Clarify all jobs and actual statutory insurance

ÖGK lists 551.10 euros monthly for ordinary marginal employment in 2026 and 755.01 euros for service cheques with a different basis. Multiple jobs, including successive jobs in the same month, may trigger statutory insurance. Check partial months and special cases individually; the app calculates no classification.

  3. 3Decide on the voluntary insuranceThe §19a route is a voluntary insurance with the ÖGK. With it you get health and pension insurance.Key step
    Why?
Some things rule this route out. For example other compulsory insurance, a pension, unemployment benefits or Kinderbetreuungsgeld.
    What you do
The ÖGK where you work is in charge. If you are self-employed, the SVS may also be in charge. Ask for clear confirmation of the route.

Confirm the voluntary section 19a route expressly

Other statutory cover, foreign connections, pension, unemployment benefits, childcare allowance and professional bodies may exclude this route. ÖGK at the employment location is responsible. Treat self-employment, multiple full insurance and assessed statutory contributions separately. Do not treat dependent cover as a blanket exclusion.

  4. 4Check when your insurance startsThis is about when your insurance starts. Usually it is the day after you apply.Key step
    Why?
Is it your first application? Do you apply within six weeks of starting the job? Then cover can start from your first work day.
    What you do
Later applications are different. Ask the ÖGK to confirm the exact start date.

Agree actual start and first application status

Cover generally begins the day after application. A first application within six weeks after employment starts may connect to the job start. Confirm subsequent applications and actual benefit access directly.

  5. 5Prepare the form and attachmentsThis is the application form for the §19a route. Sometimes you need proof of a home address abroad.Key step
    Why?
In the form you list all jobs and all insurance. Also those from abroad.
    What you do
The old form and the website say different things about living abroad. In that case ask the ÖGK directly. Do not upload documents here.
