Hand a dog over to a new owner

Official name: Prepare your dog-register keeper change

Every dog in Austria should be in a national list. This list is called the Hunderegister. If a dog comes to you or your details change, the register must be right. This plan helps you prepare this report.

How it works

These are the key steps, in the right order. Answer the short questions; then you see exactly what applies to you and what is added.

  1. 1Keep chip, register and Hundeabgabe apartThe chip is a tiny part under the dog's skin. It holds a number. The Hunderegister is a list kept by the state. The Hundeabgabe is a tax of the City of Vienna.Key step
    Why?
These are three different things. A chip alone does not mean your dog is correctly in the register.
    What you do
Keep these routes separate. The Hundeführschein (dog licence) is also its own route. This plan does not decide who owns the dog.

Keep chip, federal register and dog tax separate

Chip alone or private registration confirms no complete federal record. Pet database, Vienna dog tax and competence or licence are separate routes. This workflow decides no ownership assignment.

  2. 2Collect chip number and registration numberHere you collect the papers about the chip. This includes the chip number and the current registration number.Key step
    Why?
With these numbers your dog can be found in the register.
    What you do
Keep the papers ready at home. Only give your details to the office or the reporting service. A certified copy is not generally needed.
