Apply for family allowance

Family allowance is money from the state for parents. It helps with the costs of your child. After moving to Austria, or for an older child, you usually have to apply for it yourself. Here you see what you need and where to send the application.

How it works

These are the key steps, in the right order. Answer the short questions; then you see exactly what applies to you and what is added.

  1. 1See whether you need to applyFor a birth in Austria, family allowance comes without an application. Otherwise you need to apply. The child tax credit comes along automatically.Key step
    Why?
This way you know whether you need to do something or can just wait.
    What you do
Read the steps below. Childcare benefit is something different and has a different application.

Check whether you need to apply

Family allowance is money from the state that helps parents with the costs of their child. If your child is born in Austria, the tax office checks it automatically. In all other cases you need to apply, for example after moving here or for an adult child. You do not have to apply separately for the child tax credit (Kinderabsetzbetrag); it is paid together with the family allowance. Childcare benefit is a different benefit with a different application.

  2. 2Check the conditionsYour centre of life must be in Austria. The child lives with you, or you pay most of the costs for the child.Key step
    Why?
Only if this fits can the tax office pay.
    What you do
Centre of life means: you live here, your daily life is here, your most important ties are here. Whether you work does not matter.

    Check the conditions

Parents receive family allowance, including step-parents, adoptive and foster parents and grandparents. Your centre of vital interests must be in Austria. This means: this is where you have your closer personal and economic ties. The child lives in your household, or you pay most of its maintenance. Whether you work and how much you earn does not matter. For a child with a considerable disability there is also the increased family allowance with form Beih 3. The tax office decides whether you are entitled.

This also applies if your name or address or your child’s changes. You can report with form Beih 100 or informally in writing. Where another EU country is involved, also report a change of residence or work immediately. Money received without entitlement is reclaimed.
