How it works

These are the key steps, in the right order. Answer the short questions; then you see exactly what applies to you and what is added.

  1. 1Register your addressRegistering your residence means telling the city where you live. For this there is the Meldezettel. It is a form with your new address.Key step
    Why?
As a rule, you must register within 3 days after moving in. The property management does not do it for you. Afterwards you get a confirmation that you are registered.
    What you do
Fill in one Meldezettel per person. The person who gives you the home signs it. Take it and your original ID documents to the Meldeservice, or send it by post. Registration is free.

    This also includes

    • Get the Meldezettel signedTake the filled-in Meldezettel to your landlord. Ask for the signature.
    • Register only after you move inPrepare the Meldezettel and records now. Records are official papers, for example your birth certificate. Register with the Meldeservice at the latest 3 days after moving in.
    • Prepare a registration for each personFill in a separate Meldezettel for each person. Clarify residence and insurance for each person separately with the responsible offices.
    • Register your children tooFill in a registration form for each child and take it with you when you register. Bring the child’s birth certificate.
    Where?
Meldeservice WienRegistration service or postal route; check official instructions
    When?
Generally within 3 days of moving in; check exceptions. No automatically calculated due date.

  2. 2Make sure you have health insuranceHealth insurance pays for doctors and hospitals. In Austria there are insurance providers for this, for example the ÖGK. That is the Austrian health insurance fund.Key step
    Why?
If you get ill, you need cover. Registering your home alone does not make you insured.
    What you do
First check: are you already insured through work, through family or abroad? If not, you may be able to insure yourself. Then get advice at the ÖGK about start, waiting time and documents.

  3. 3Set up electricity, gas and internetIn your new home you need electricity, often gas or district heating too, and usually internet. You sign contracts for these in your name. For everyone
    Why?
Without your own contract the electricity may be switched off. An internet connection often takes a few weeks.
    What you do
On the day you get the keys, read the meters and take a photo. Register electricity and gas with a supplier of your choice. Order internet early. Tell your household insurance the new address.

Set up electricity, gas and internet

On handover day read the meters for electricity, gas or district heating and take a photo. Register electricity and gas in your name with the supplier you choose, otherwise the supply may stop. Arrange internet and phone early, because a connection often takes weeks. Tell your household insurance about the new home.

  4. 4Tell everyone your new addressMany places still have your old address. For example your employer, AMS, tax office, health insurer, bank, insurance, school, doctor and phone provider. They should all get your new address. For everyone
    Why?
That way letters and bills arrive correctly. Mail forwarding at the post office helps at the start, but does not replace these notices.
    What you do
Make a list of all these places. Check for each one how to report your new address. Tick off what is done.

  5. 5ORF fee: it comes by itselfThe ORF fee is money for public broadcasting in Austria. It is paid once for each main residence, even without a TV. The ORF fee service, OBS for short, is responsible.Key step
    Why?
You do not need to register yourself. OBS gets your address from the register of residents and sends you a letter with the amount.
    What you do
Wait for the letter. Contact OBS only if someone else in your home already pays, or if you have little money and want an exemption.

ORF fee: comes automatically, report only special cases

The ORF fee is linked to the main residence; owning a device is not a requirement. You do not need to register for it yourself. The ORF fee service receives the main-residence data from the register of residents and sends you the bill by post. Contact them yourself only if someone else in the household already pays or if you want to apply for an exemption. You report a move only to the registration office.

    Why?
Then you need to go to an office less often. Residence registration can also be done online with it.
